Residents in a number of small Australian towns who forget to lock their cars face fines of $350.
Police in the Yarra Ranges - who are desperate to reduce the spiraling number of car break-ins - have been branded cruel and over-the-top by drivers after introducing $350 fines for motorists who fail to lock their vehicles.
Theft of valuables from cars in the region jumped 10 per cent in the past year, with over forty per cent of those thefts from unlocked cars.
Peter Roehlen - a local resident who strongly opposes the new law - said: "Great country we live in. Make a simple mistake and if the criminals don't make a victim of you the cops will do it for them."
